I grew up here in Union County and still live behind my parents old home place. I have literally been in church since nine months before I was born. I attended Bentons Cross Baptist Church until I was around twenty years old. I accepted Christ as my Savior and Lord on August 9, 1968 in a Revival meeting that Rev. Glenn Rushing was preaching. I was later baptized and became a member of the church.
I met my wife through one of her brothers when we were at Fort Sill Oklahoma. Annette and I were married on November the 23 1974 in her home town of Albuquerque, New Mexico. We have two daughters and six grandchildren.
Call to the Ministry: At the age of eighteen, I first felt God speaking to me about becoming a minister. However, I eventually dismissed it as a mistake on my part. Years later at the age of thirty-four God began to deal with me about preaching His Word. This time I sought to answer Him by doing everything but preach. I served as Brotherhood Director, Sunday School Teacher, and an assistant leader at a home Bible study, but the Holy Spirit kept dealing with me about preaching God’s Word. On February 2, 1993, I called a friend of mine Rev. Bobby Helms to discuss my feelings. I told Bobby it was not the preaching that I was afraid of doing. It was the thought that I might be mistaken about God’s calling on my life. Bobby suggested that we do like Gideon did in the Old Testament and ask God for a sign to confirm my call to the ministry. We joined that Saturday afternoon in prayer asking god to give me that sign. The next morning I was so troubled that I could not finish my Sunday School Lesson. So, I turned on Dr. Charles Stanley’s service. He was preaching a message entitled “Being Obedient to God’s Call”. I believe God confirmed my call that day and I announced it to my church on that same Sunday.
I graduated from Piedmont High School in 1974. In January of 1995 I left the North Carolina Department Of Corrections where had worked for almost ten years. I left for college full time at the age of thirty-eight leaving Annette to look after the home and our two girls accept for weekends and Mondays when I worked part- time. It was the hardest and greatest time of my life. We found strength' help and encouragement from family, friends and Lakeview Baptist Church. But through it all God provided, guided, and taught me some of the greatest lessons of my life. Many were learned from outside the classroom learning through the circumstances with my friend and college roommate Rev. Tim Helms and other friends. By the grace of God I graduated from Fruitland Baptist Bible Institute (the best school in NC) with a Associate Degree in Religious Education & Pastoral Ministries.
My Philosophy of Ministry: I believe that a church will only be blessed if the church and the pastor are surrendered to God. Allowing God to do whatever He wants with the church and the people of the church. The church must be willing to receive a Word from God and accept whoever he sends to the church regardless of where they were born or what they look like. We must allow God to work in us and through us if we want to see a great moving of the Holy Spirit. If we are not surrendered, God will bring us to a point of brokenness where we will surrender to Him. Once we reach that point God is ready to go to work. I have learned from personal experience that it is a lot easier to surrender first. God will not move in a church that serves self instead of the Savior.
Doctrinal Statement: My faith, personal life and preaching are based upon the conviction that ’all Scripture is given by inspiration of God” and that it is therefore God-breathed.. “Quick and Powerful” and profitable for reproof, correction, for instruction in righteousness.” Therefore, it is truth without error, trustworthy, and the final word of appeal in all areas of knowledge and understanding. I am committed to the careful study and to the divine call for obedience to Christ as His Gospel and Mission are generally understood by Baptist and are set forth in the “Baptist Faith and Message” statement.
I love to read and my favorite authors are, Charles Stanley, Adrian Rogers, Max Lucado, Lee Strobel, Tim Lahaye and Louis Lamour. It would take a long list to cover them all. I also love all sports except for hockey and soccer which I can't understand. I also enjoy NASCAR and all the gun sports.
I feel very strongly that as individuals and as churches we must be Christ centered not self centered. The church is on mission to tell the world that salvation comes from Christ and Christ alone. Everything else we do must have that as its final goal.
